Description
Chocolate was first consumed as a spiced, bitter drink by Olmec, Mayan and Aztec peoples in Central and South America. After grinding the cacao with a stone, spices, chilis and cornmeal were added to the fermented cacao pulp mixture, which was drunk for vitality, health, and virility.
Our Spicy Xocoatl Sipping Cocoa mix is inspired by this ancient tradition and Mexican champurrado, sweetened with panela to create a fragrant, lightly sweetened drink with a little heat. Blending pure ground dark chocolate, deep dark cocoa powder, masa harina (nixtamal corn), a hand ground blend of spices, and the heat of locally grown chili pepper, it melts smoothly when stirred into hot water, milk, vegan mylks, or coffee and espresso drinks. Since we use whole ground botanicals, some sediment at the bottom of the cup is natural.
Available seasonally during the cooler months.
