Chocolate was first consumed as a spiced, bitter drink during the Mayan and Aztec periods in Central and South America. After grinding the cacao with a stone, spices, chilis and cornmeal were added to the fermented cacao pulp mixture, which was then drunk for general vitality, health, and virility.Our Mayan Spicy Xocoatl Sipping Cocoa mix is a blend of pure ground dark chocolate, deep dark Swiss cocoa powder, masa (corn), our own hand ground blend of spices based on Mayan recipes, and the heat of locally grown chili pepper that melts smoothly when stirred into hot milk, vegan mylks, or coffee and espresso drinks.
