Alla Prima – Out of the Attic – selection of vintage landscape paintings by leisure artists

For the past 20+ years co-owners John and Dar have been collecting amateur art from local vintage shops and adding to their collection. In May – June we will celebrate the beginner’s eye, and the origins of the word “amateur” which derives from the Latin word “amare” meaning “to love”, highlighting passion-driven action rather than skill level. These charming landscapes were rendered in the “alla prima” technique, meaning wet-on-wet paint, and were typically created in under an hour, in the same technique championed by the infamous Bob Ross. Encompassing a wide range of skill, they all embody the happy-little-trees-and-clouds we associate with those who paint purely for the joy of it.
